Self Portrait Photo's

Busy!! My word this week has been fabulous in its busy-ness :). So far I've done three workshops, two shoots, dinner and drinks with friends, started planning a celebratory holiday for September and started running again! My legs are sore, my brain is full of new knowledge and I have lots of plans-plus a huge shoot tomorrow morning that I am beyond excited to share! Wheeeweee.

A workshop with Simon Green and Studio20E

I took part in a workshop with Simon on Sunday as part of Studio20e, a studio he runs in Cornwall helping to mentor and teach people in the field of photography through workshops and other such things. If you want help just getting to know your camera, or want to take your skills a bit further then look them up! It is primarily run by Simon and his wife Suzanna (who does freelance hair and make up styling). Check them out :)

nice little hearts on the wall outside the studio :)

noticing a theme yet?

Ok so you can tell the theme is obviously hearts. Obviously But in all honestly its sums up how I am currently feeling about life, photography and my new lens in particular!!

Normal Scheduling

So I only briefly posted about it last week, but as of today the normal scheduling will be changing. I have made a decision to make the Weekly Word Photo project into a Monthly Word Photo project. I simply feel that I do not dedicate as much time and effort to the images as they deserve, and do not want to be churning out low quality work. So later today the Self Portrait image will still be out as normal, but the Word Photo will now be shown towards the end of each month.

I believe that I originally said that both the Self Portrait project and the Weekly Word Photo project would become once a month projects, but I have decided to leave the Self Portrait project as weekly as I like being able to make a simple representation of my week and do not feel that it is too time consuming.

I hope all this sits well with you lovely readers, and make sure to check back later! :)

Comparison of two "homes": Vancouver vs. Cornwall

This project has been in development for the whole of this year.... literally...... I first mentioned it a while ago, and it may have completely passed most of you by.

This project (a one off) revolves around comparing the two places in which I have been lucky enough to call "home" in the last couple of years. They are vastly different both due to the country they are in, and their urbanicity. (I know, I just made that word up :).)

Take a look see.....

Note- the images are web sized and therefore quite small so please double click on them to see them larger. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Do you see it? Do you like it? I know some of you are scared of commenting (or something) but feedback on the little changes I make around here is really valuable to me, so please, today, take the time out to let me know what you think!

Thank you!

Origin Barista Training

I started working in the catering industry when I was 13. I got my first job in cafe through that long legged girl that is my best friend. The family that ran the business at the time are still very close to me, and hopefully always will be. When I started in the industry, one of the first things I learnt was how to use a coffee machine. I prided myself in learning how to create smooth frothy milk for my customers, and after I left the little cafe, I moved onto to bigger and better restaurants and cafe's that gave me the barista training I desired. Since then I have fallen in love with coffee. I can't really explain it, as I don't like to drink coffee- I don't even like to drink tea! I am a water and juice kinda gal :). Yet maintaining a coffee machine, learning about the beans, producing quality crema and even cleaning the machine gives me pride and makes me happy. I love it :) I now become the coffee girl wherever I work.

In some ways this is quite strange to me, as I started out loving the job because of the people and the customers. I am a sociable person. But over the years the coffee has drawn me in, and left me wanting more. I felt that the training I had been offered though work just wasn't enough. Plus, having not had a regular job over the last 2 years, but spits and spats of work, I have become rusty. And so I contacted Origin.

Both times I have had barista training though work, it has been with Origin, and they have always proven themselves to be fabulous. I like working with them, even if I only come into contact with their colourful delivery van and the nice smiley man inside it :). And so, I contacted Origin to see if they could help me. Within a couple of days I had a response saying that they could happily squeeze me onto a course in their warehouse if I wanted. So on Thursday of this week I will be spending my day with lovely gentlemen of Origin Coffee. Next week i will write all about my day with them, and share some images from the day too, but more information on the local Cornish coffee company that is Origin coffee, please head over to their website.

I love my new lens

I bought a new lens last week! :D It arrived in super duper quick time and is much better quality than the standard lens that came with my camera, and is much faster, wider and brighter! It is also perfect for portrait shots, and I will have a few portrait shoots to share with you soon!

But for now, here are a few product shots I took with it at the beginning of the week.

Jasmine Star

Today I want to talk about Jasmine Star. Jasmine is an international wedding photographer who started up her own business only 5 years ago. She was only introduced to me this year, but I already love her. I think she is amazing and inspirational. She does what she wants, and goes with what she believes in. It works for her, it really does.

An example of this is how much she shares. She is openly herself, and creates a strong online presence for herself that attracts a certain type of client to her. They know and value who she is as a person, not just a photographer. Another example of this is that she has only just introduced a disk of images into her collections (packages). She believes that as we are now in an online age, the only way to share images with clients, is online. It acts not only as insurance for her images, as they will be constantly backed up and safe online, even if your house burns down, but also as advertising for her brand. Everyone has a phone, or an ipod, or a pad, or a laptop, or some kind of digital sharing platform so why not give clients an easy way to share your images? Her perfect example was that say one her brides is on a plane and is sitting next to a girl who is looking for a wedding photographer. Will the bride be carrying her photo album or box of prints with her? No. But will she be carrying her iPad? Yes! There we go, instant marketing.

But what I love about her the most, is how willing she is to help. Jasmine wants to help others like no one I have ever met before. Do you think it's profitable to spend $10,000 on an advertising campaign? Well Jasmine doesn't- she thinks you might as well donate it anonymously to a children's hospital and then use your services to help the families in ways that they couldn't afford. You will get advertising through this and be known as a good person. Beautiful right!? I mean seriously. LOVE HER.

So as I was saying, she loves to help people, and one of her ways of doing this is working with Creative Live to provide courses and workshops for other photographers. 6-7 hours long, each session is held is a different part of America with students present- but it is also available- for free (!) online. So, Friday and Saturday night what do you think I was doing!? Yup that's right, I was tuning into her!

If you want to start any business yourself, or ever be self employed, I think it is worth tuning in. She knows her stuff. Her method for her photography business is 20% photography and 80% business. Plus she really knows what's she doing. Even though she's only been going for 5 years. Many of the students that were present for the class weren't photographers. There was interior designers, graphic designers, a whole wealth of other people. The important thing to realise, especially for prospective clients, is that any creative person who starts a business- runs a business. It has to be profitable for them to be running a professional photography business. And so a lot of what Jasmine talks about is how to run a business. How she did it, what worked for her, and what she thinks works.

If you really are interested in starting up by yourself, in any creative field then you can buy the 2 day class that happened over the weekend for $99. If you have the money to invest, it's worth it. I promise.

Many many many many and I mean many other photographers also tuned in, and so far the reports back are that they have been inspired. To make changes and to make an impact. They want more, they want to be the best. The fact that one woman can simply share her story and create this impact across the world is huge. She believes that God put her here to share, but whatever it is for you, we are most definitely glad she does it! I have gained so many tips and tidbits of useful information that will apply for any type of photography business I want to run. She has inspired me to be a better human being, as well as a better photographer. Like I said- I kinda love her :).

P.S do you get the feeling that I like this girl.....?!

What a week

I know that it seemed a bit quiet on the blog last week, but I promise you, it was a busy one for me and this week is not going to be any different! There's quite a lot to share with you, and lots of images on their way too. I have a couple of shoots lined up, plus I'm partaking in some workshops that I'm excited to share with you :)

I also have some images from projects old and new to share with you, plus some new ideas I want to introduce you to. But firstly, I want to share some personal photos from last week.

One thing me and the mr love and cherish about living in Cornwall, is the sea. We especially love jumping into it. Lucky for us a few friends share that joy and we try to venture out whenever we can. Sadly last week due to strong swells and high tides we could only swim... but we still had fun :). I also had the joy of being able to borrow and underwater housing from Simon (which I spent an hour testing the night before....!!)

Because of the plastic of the housing and the water the images look like I took them with a lomography camera and a plastic lens. However I didn't.....

Weekly Word Photo- "Argument"

This word kind of makes me jump for joy photographically. It seemed like so much fun! I get to scream at someone? For an image? AWESOME.

This is pretty much the face I bet Mike wishes he could pull when were arguing...

Sadly however I'm starting to feel like the weekly image projects are not getting enough of my attention as they deserve. I don't want to churn out images just to meet a deadline. I want to take my time to creatively produce an image that is worth sharing. I don't want to share adequacy. I feel like this week's image is rather average, and that I could have made an image that much better fits with the idea of awesomeness I had/have in my mind.

Therefore from now on both the Weekly Word Photo project, and the Self Portrait project will become a monthly project, giving me more time to focus on these as well as everything else in my day-to-day schedule. Hopefully we will all see an increase in the quality of images I produce because of this, and hopefully you all will agree!
